If you know me, you know my go-to summer beverage is a margarita! If you know me well, you’ve been out with me while I ask the server multiple questions about what is actually in the margarita on the menu (don’t trust the description!) and then given them my own recipe to make! I’m really not that high maintenance, but I am particular about the taste of this beverage and more importantly the after effects!
Added sweeteners such as agave, sugar in the sour mix, lime syrup versus actual lime juice and more all contribute to excessive sugar content in typical restaurant margaritas. If you’re buying margarita mix, you’re getting a sugar bomb, too. I don’t want you to be afraid of sugar – it is an energy source and can be enjoyed in moderate amounts. However, the after-effects of excessive sugar consumption can include blood sugar and mood fluctuations as well as digestive distress, and headaches among other symptoms.

Low Sugar Beet Margarita
- 1.5 oz silver tequila
- .5 oz orange liquer
- Juice of 1/2 fresh lime
- 1 Tbsp beet juice
- 1 Cup ice
optional: juice from wedge of lemon or orange, salt for rim
- Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker, cover and shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds
- Pour into any cocktail or margarita glass and enjoy!
