While the company may market this as “pedialyte for grown-ups” it’s definitely better than that – have you seen all the garbage in pedialyte? I am not a fan of those artificial sweeteners and flavors. Don’t give it to your kids (you can make your own if they get sick) and for you as an adult, try this instead.I was contacted by the owner to see if I’d like some samples for myself and my athletes. After checking the ingredient list, and noting it was all real and no fake, I accepted. I later found out the he is from Bucks County himself – woohoo! He developed this product for anyone who doesn’t want the sugar, ingredients, and yucky taste that most electrolyte or sports beverages provide. You can read his more detailed version of the story here.
As you can see below, Brode is free of the garbage you typically get in a sports drink. While it is a supplement, and you all know I am pro-food first, endurance athletes need to ensure they are supporting their body. With long races that are in the heat, everyone needs to replace electrolytes to maintain fluid balance and therefore proper heart and kidney function. If you are a salt sweater (you know who you are!) like me and can taste it on your lips during a long run, you need to replace lytes even more! While best consumed from fruits and veggies, there is a vitamin C boost in Brode as well. Endurance athletes are at a greater risk of upper respiratory tract infections due to Vitamin C being over-used in their training and races to protect the lung cells. Eat more than 5 servings of fruits and veggies per day as a base (I recommend 7-8) but, while racing this can be a helpful addition.
Last weekend I had a client competing in a 12 hour trail race. He was bringing his camel back which, if you have one know, is great for water but not for other beverages. He planned and trained to have plenty of dates, That’s It bars and more while racing but, he really still needed an electrolyte boost and couldn’t mix it in his water. Brode was perfect for this scenario since most not beverage electrolytes have to be mixed with the water!
As a dietitian, I do promote flexibility so, drinking in moderation is fine but I have not tested and cannot comment on taking Brode while drinking to prevent a hangover!
In terms of flying, I did use Brode for the first time on my own while taking a red eye back to PA from Portland. It may have helped a bit but quite honestly, with getting off of a plane and going directly to a 10ish hour work day, nothing was really going to make me feel normal and energized!
While my running training has decreased due to a couple of chronic injuries that like to pop up and bother me randomly, I do still have the Philly Tri Rock Sprint tri I am training for and if all goes well joint wise, an Olympic distance in August. I plan to use Brode along with dates on my longer training days when I am going for 2 hours+ and going to be out in the summer heat sweating up a storm!
